In the study involving 36 patients aged 65 years and older, it is shown that oral sodium phosphate used for bowel preparation for colonoscopy or barium enema can cause serious electrolyte disorders. The use of the drug led to increased levels of phosphate in the blood serum, and were observed inverse correlation between the increase of its concentration and creatinine clearance (p = 0.001). After 1 day after application of sodium phosphate in 21 (58%) patients developed hypocalcemia and 20 - hypokalemia. 5 patients required drug correction of hypokalemia.
